Nurturing to Independence

Today we looked at Kingdom Animalia and Phylum Mollusca.  Mollusca means “soft.”  It is a whole vast group of creatures.  Only Phylum Arthropoda has more types of creatures.  Who knew there were so many, many types of mollusks?

There are three main classes of Phylum Mollusca:  The gastropods, the cephalopods, and the bivalves.  Since we can’t go observe together, here are several videos to tide us over:

imageThe word gastropod means stomach (gastro) foot (pod).  Here is a lovely example of how a gastropod (Lightening Whelk) uses its stomach foot to turn itself over.

If your family goes to the beach, you must be very patient and very observant to see the imagegastropods move.  It’s fascinating to watch the nose (siphon) poke out and then its eyes.  Watch carefully.
